In 1980 Paul came out to California from
Michigan to pursue his dream of becoming a body builder. He landed at the world
famous Gold's Gym in Venice, CA. After living in his car and training at the
gym for a few months someone at Gold's asked him to help her formulate a fitness
program. Thus, Personal Training started at Gold's Gym. Only Paul and one
other bodybuilder were doing this back then, but it soon caught on.
Fast forward seven years and many clients
later, Paul and Carolyn met. Carolyn was a student at UCLA and an athlete of
the school rowing crew. Soon after meeting, Paul offered to hurt, err, I mean
train Carolyn at Gold's. Yeah, good times.
Seeing how much fun Paul was having training
clients Carolyn decided to jump in the game. All of her clients were “in-home”
and she drove all around Los Angeles in her little Isuzu Trooper to take care of
their fitness needs. Three children later, in 1993 the Fetters decided it was
time to raise their growing family in Huntington Beach.
Carolyn was now a full-time stay-at-home mommy
and Paul continued to drive up to Gold's in Venice for the mornings. In the
afternoons Paul was making a new name for himself here in the OC. After four
years of splitting up his day between LA and OC personal training sessions it
was time to open his own facility. The only logical place was close to home,
like right in his garage! This was many people's gym of choice for the next
five years.
With Carolyn back training clients after the
birth of their fourth child, and Paul maxed out, they realized that it was time
to take yet another step and open a “real,” larger facility that could
accommodate even more people. Saying “no” wasn't an option when it came to
helping people become fit. They needed more space for sure.
What to call it....well, how about “The Garage
Spot?” That would be a funny legacy, but for obvious reasons, not a good
choice. They replaced the word Garage with what they offered, Training....and
so it goes. May of 2007 will be their fifth year at the Gothard location and it
has been a great experience for The Fetters. Many wonderful life-long
relationships have been formed since the Garage days and on into The Training
Spot.
Again, the Fetters found themselves running
out of room. They couldn't make the Gothard TSpot bigger and they have always
loved the downtown area of HB. One day Paul saw this old ugly Laundromat with a
“For Lease” sign in the window. He called the number, and called and called.
Paul just knew that this was it, the next Training Spot. He was right! Paul
and Carolyn are so glad that you are all here at the Training Spot,
at the beach.
