The Buddy Factor: 3 Reasons Why Training with a Friend Will Get You Ahead

Han Solo and Chewbacca. Batman and Robin. Jake and Elwood. Yoko Ono and John Lennon. Okay, maybe the last pair aren’t the best example, but if there’s one thing these famous duos can teach us, it’s the power of having a partner by your side. Teaming up with someone whom shares similar values, and goals will not only enrich your fitness experience, but will provide a multitude of other benefits as well.

  1. Accountability

We’ve all had those mornings. You know, the ones where we wake up and can hardly get out of bed, let alone get to the gym. A million and a half excuses run through our minds as to why it’s totally okay to skip the day’s workout. After all, you’re only letting yourself down right? And that somehow is supposed to be okay. However, add a second person into the mix, and all of a sudden we have more than ourselves to consider. Nobody likes bailing on friends! Keep your plans, and eventually making it to your gym session just becomes a habit. Furthermore, sometimes a friend’s encouragement is all you need to escape that rut preventing you from fulfilling your fitness duties. This brings us to our next point…

  1. Motivation

One of the most crucial elements of one’s health and fitness journey is having a support system. Sometimes all we need to take it to the next level is having that one person telling us we can. Whether it’s for that one last set, rep, or mile, a little bit of encouragement can go a long way. Having a workout buddy increases our chances of success by being our own personal cheerleader. Besides that, working out together can also foster a little bit of healthy competition! Just make sure that your partner is in the relatively same ballfield as you physically.

  1. Train Together, Celebrate Together

Victories are always sweeter when celebrated with someone else. Sharing a common experience and succeeding together can be much more fulfilling versus doing it on your own. Starting from point A and working together to reach point B is not only very motivating, but it’s also a great way to ensure that neither of you falls off the wagon in the process. Plus, you can plan your rewards together! Whether that means a fun mini-vacation or a night out on the town, knowing you’ll be in the company of your ally makes the reward that much more desirable!

As humans, we’re naturally social mammals. We’re literally programmed to thrive when teamed up with another person. This is especially true when it comes to your health and fitness. Embarking on the path of fitness and well-being can be difficult and intimidating, but you don’t have to go it alone. At the T-Spot, we encourage you to bring a friend along, which is why we have made this week our “Buddy Week”. We invite you to bring a friend or spouse with you to your next session, they train for free! There’s also some cool prizes that can be won as well. For more information, call us at 714-374-7448.
