I have to admit that in the past, I always chose sports that were not about team work. I played football and baseball, but the sports I was drawn to were track, tennis, wrestling, swimming, and bodybuilding. I decided to do something out of the norm for me and take advantage of an opportunity that will teach me more about teamwork. So what does this have to do with the arts? By volunteering my time to them, I will be a part of a team in the Pageant of The Masters in Laguna Beach! I found a way to support the arts, volunteer and be part of a team. The role I play in the pageant is a statue in the Strauss Memorial piece. I will be painted white 32 times between July 5th and August 31st. So far, I had the pleasure of watching all the volunteers come together to build the sets, make the clothes, wigs and just plain help where help was needed. There are 9 models in my scene alone and they work together at rehearsals, walk through and hold still in the actual piece during the performances. In order for this to come together everyone needs to work as a team. It’s rewarding for me to go out of my comfort zone, participate in something so different, so…artsy and learn to work well as a team.
Through this experience, I realized that we need to be aware of the time, energy and expense that is required to create beauty of the arts for our senses to enjoy. In order to appreciate the arts, we should be willing to support them with our time and money.
