Antioxidants play a key role in protecting your health – so finding ways to incorporate them into your diet is crucial.

We encourage all our weight loss Orange County clients to eat foods rich in antioxidants because research shows that antioxidant-rich foods can help you to lose weight, as well as get healthy and fight disease.

The best way to ensure you get plenty of antioxidants is by eating fresh fruit, vegetables and whole foods.

However, some foods are higher in antioxidants than others, so to help you make the best choices when you do your next grocery shop, we’ve put together this list of the top three foods to give your antioxidant levels a boost:

Blueberries

These tasty berries are marketed as a ‘superfood’ – and not without good reason. They are packed with antioxidants which have been associated with anti-ageing effects and the prevention of cancer. They’re also low in calories so many of our weight loss Orange County clients choose to mix them with yoghurt for the perfect weight loss-friendly breakfast.

Chocolate

Before you get too excited, this does apply to all varieties of the sweet stuff! You need to go for a high-quality dark chocolate – not the sugar-laden milky stuff. The antioxidants in dark chocolate help your body get rid of free radicals, which cause oxidative damage to cells. Chocolate is also a great mood booster – but it is high in calories so limit your intake to one or two small squares a day.

Red kidney beans

Cheap, versatile and filling, red kidney beans should be top of your shopping list. Many of our weight loss Orange County clients are surprised to learn that they are also really high in antioxidants. They are great addition to Mexican dishes or can be used as a tasty addition to salads.
